Wind and solar power help increase the use of renewable energy in the U.S.

According to new data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), driven by the continuous growth of wind power and solar energy, the use of renewable energy in the United States reached a record high in the first half of 2021. However, fossil fuels are still the country’s main energy source.
According to EIA’s Monthly Energy Review, wind energy is now the largest renewable energy source in the United States, accounting for 28% of the country’s total renewable energy production. During this period, the use of solar energy grew the fastest, increasing by 24%. The U.S. Department of Energy stated that the continued growth of solar energy may mean that half of the U.S. electricity supply can be provided by energy by 2050. Wind energy has grown by nearly 10%, and biofuels has grown by 6.5%.
According to EIA data, the energy produced by fossil fuels has declined slightly, but it still accounts for 79% of the U.S. usage, including data as of the end of June. In the first half of 2021, fossil fuel consumption increased by 6.5% compared with the same period in 2020, of which coal consumption increased by nearly 30%. EIA stated that energy carbon emissions have also increased by nearly 8%.
“The continued dominance of US energy production and use of fossil fuels and the corresponding increase in carbon dioxide emissions are shocking,” said Ken Bossong, executive director of the SUN DAY Campaign. “Fortunately, renewable energy is slowly expanding its share of the energy market.”
Although the use of fossil fuels is still high, EIA predicted earlier in 2021 that by 2050, renewable energy will increase U.S. power generation by as much as 50%, and this growth will be stimulated by solar power generation .
According to the EIA report, renewable energy accounts for 13% of the energy produced in the United States. This includes energy for electricity and transportation, as well as other uses. Renewable energy production during this period was 6.2 trillion British thermal units (Btu), an increase of 3% over the same period in 2020 and an increase of 4% over 2019.
Biomass energy closely follows wind energy, accounting for 21% of US renewable energy production. Hydro power (nearly 20%), biofuels (17%) and solar energy (12%) also provide important renewable energy.
According to EIA data, in the United States, industry accounts for one-third of the country’s energy use. Manufacturing accounts for 77% of the total.
