The U.S. Department of Energy rewards nearly $40 million for decarbonized solar technology from the grid

Funds support 40 projects that will improve the life and reliability of solar photovoltaics and accelerate the industrial application of solar power generation and storage
Washington, DC-The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today allocated nearly $40 million to 40 projects that are advancing the next generation of solar energy, storage, and industry necessary to achieve the Biden-Harris government’s climate goal of 100% clean electricity technology. 2035. Specifically, these projects will reduce the cost of solar technology by extending the life of photovoltaic (PV) systems from 30 to 50 years, developing technologies that use solar energy for fuel and chemical production, and advancing new storage technologies.
“We are focused on deploying more solar energy and developing more cost-effective technologies to decarbonize our power system,” said Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm. “Research and development of stronger and longer-lasting solar panels is critical to solving the climate crisis. The 40 projects announced today — led by universities and private companies across the country — are investments in the next generation of innovations that will Strengthen the country’s solar power generation capacity and enhance the resilience of our grid.”
The 40 projects announced today focus on concentrated solar thermal power (CSP) and photovoltaic power generation. Photovoltaic technology directly converts sunlight into electricity, while CSP obtains heat from the sunlight and uses the heat energy. These projects will focus on:
“Colorado is in a leading position in the deployment of clean energy and the development of innovative solar energy technologies, while demonstrating the obvious economic benefits of investing in the clean energy industry. These projects are exactly the type of research we should invest in to decarbonize the grid and ensure the US solar industry. The long-term growth of the country and the response to climate change,” said U.S. Senator Michael Bennet (CO).
“This investment by the Department of Energy in the University of Wisconsin-Madison will support new technologies and innovations in concentrating solar power plants, thereby reducing operating costs and improving reliability. We thank the Biden administration for recognizing the science, research, and innovation of Wisconsin manufacturing. Innovation can play a leading role in helping create clean energy jobs and the renewable energy economy,” said U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (WI).
“These are key resources to help the Nevada higher education system continue to lead its cutting-edge research programs. Nevada’s innovation economy benefits everyone in our state and the country, and I will continue to promote it through my innovation state program to fund research , Support clean and renewable energy and create high-paying jobs,” said U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto. (Nevada).
“Northwest Ohio continues to play a leading role in shaping the country and the global response to the climate change crisis. The University of Toledo is at the forefront of this work, and its work to advance the next generation of solar technology will provide us with what we need to succeed in the 21st century. It plays a key role in affordable, reliable, and low-emission energy,” said Marcy Kaptur (OH-09), chairman of the Energy and Water Development Committee of the House Appropriations Subcommittee and U.S. Representative.
“The National Renewable Energy Laboratory continues to shine as the world’s leading renewable energy and energy efficiency laboratory through breakthrough innovations in solar technology. These two projects will improve energy storage and enable perovskite technology ( Direct conversion of sunlight into electricity) is more accessible, which helps us move towards a cleaner future. I am proud of today’s announcement and NREL’s continued work to combat climate change,” said US Representative Ed Perlmutter (CO-07) .
“I would like to congratulate the UNLV team for obtaining US$200,000 from the Department of Energy for their pioneering research to improve the efficiency of renewable energy power generation. As the country’s fastest warming city and the most sunny state, Nevada is in our There are many benefits from the transition to a clean energy economy. These investments will promote the necessary research and innovation to stimulate this development,” said Dina Titus (NV-01), the representative of the United States.
“These awards will undoubtedly promote the much-needed solar energy, storage and industrial technologies, and will lay the foundation for the realization of a zero-carbon grid-an investment needed to combat climate change. I am proud to see the 13th Columbia University New York The winners of the congressional district continue their pioneering research on solar technology. Renewable solar energy is vital to our efforts to reduce the country’s carbon footprint, and I commend Secretary Granholm for his continued commitment to addressing the changing path-the increasingly severe climate Crisis,” said U.S. Representative Adriano Esparat (NY-13).
“We continue to witness the effects of climate change firsthand in New Hampshire and across the country. When we want to protect our planet, continued investment in innovative clean energy technologies is critical. I am very pleased that Brayton Energy will receive these federal funds to continue For their work on sustainable energy, I remain committed to ensuring that New Hampshire remains a leader in building our clean energy future,” said US representative Chris Pappas (NH-01).
In order to better inform the Department of Energy’s future research needs, the Department of Energy solicits opinions on two requests for information: (1) support for the proposed research areas of solar manufacturing in the United States and (2) performance targets for perovskite photovoltaics. Encourage stakeholders in the solar industry, the business community, financing entities, and others to respond.
